Firearms and Weapons in RCFEs

Firearms regulations are coming! CDSS has yet to update the General Licensing Requirements, but the Health and Safety code changes from SB-172 gives us a good idea of what to expect in the coming months. This new law is also known as the “Keep Our Seniors Safe Act.”

LGBT Older Adult Care

Sensitivity to the aging Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community (LGBT) is part of the RCFE Core of Knowledge.  The LGBT community has seen significant gains in civil rights and consequently, more older adults identifying as LGBT. An estimated 2.4 million adults over the age of 65 identify as LGBT, and this number is expected to double by 2030.  This article focuses on considerations for caring for this growing population of older adults.

Give the Tour Families Want

Nowadays, families are inundated with mailers and advertisements for local assisted living options.  Families can also do a decent amount of research on assisted living using the internet.  These brochures and searches give families the general scope of services assisted living facilities provide—assistance with meals, housekeeping, bathing, activities, reminders, etc. 

Dental Care and Oral Hygiene in RCFEs

Dental care for RCFE residents is not spelled out in Title 22,.  It is mentioned as part of Article 8, Section 87464, Basic Services which states facilities shall include, at a minimum, arrangements to meet the requirements of Section 87465, Incidental Medical and Dental Care Services.  Section 87465 offers a bit more detail stating facilities shall have a plan to encourage routine dental care and shall provide assistance in obtaining such care.  But exactly how facilities encourage and provide assistance is up to you and your staff.  This article offers some helpful tips from the dental community to freshen up your approach.

All Aboard: Improving Transportation Services

As people age, it becomes more difficult to drive.  Vision, mobility, and mental capacity decline.  Also, the side effects of some medications may create problems.  But many older adults do not want to stop driving.  Some see it as a significant loss.  Others may see it as a threat to their well-being.  There may be truth to this.  Some research shows that when older adults stop driving, they experience lower life satisfaction, depression, and a decline in their general health (Liddle, 2012) (Marottoli, 1997) (Edwards, 2009).​
